Fire Prevention Week – October 4-10, 2015

Smoke Alarms Save Lives!

This week – October 4th through the 10th – is Fire Prevention Week, thanks to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).

We have discussed local and national requirements for smoke and CO detectors before – but the most important thing to remember is that while 62% of homes report having smoke alarms, there are still homes whose smoke alarms don’t work or respond.  The NFPA reports that working smoke alarms cut the chances of dying in a fire by half!

If you’re in doubt of national statistics in regards to fires, smoke alarms, and public safety, then don’t hesitate to check out this page from the NFPA – which features five vital, hard-hitting reports.

When it comes to smoke alarms, it’s about “location, location, location”.

The key message of this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4-10, is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms.
